The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.
He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
