A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
