"When are you interviewing Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Recognition

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
