Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
