White House Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.
